What's In the Box!?

Yesterday FedEx delivered a package that I had long been awaiting. What joy! It’s filled with these little buggers, and I can’t wait to get them up and running. What are they, you say? What do they do? Well, I’ll keep that a secret for now. I want it to be a surprise. But you are welcome to guess, of course!

There's a new kid in town…

Gather your families and rejoice! Wrench.se just got a visual makeover. Fun for all and an experience to remember! Tell your friends.

The coming days some minor tweaking and maintenance will be done. If a page suddenly starts looking strange, this is probably why. But do not worry, it is all according to plan! Hopefully this will make the page easier to navigate and nicer to look at. Some new pages are due pretty soon as well so be sure to be on the lookout for that.

Sincerely,
Your best friend

Ambient Thursday

train
I thought I’d share with you something completely new, straight out of the womb, as well as something old. There is not too much to say about any of the pieces other than that they are electronic and ambient.
The first one (the new) I plan on putting together with some other songs to make a record in the future and while I am not a particular fan, nor producer, of ambient music, I feel that it will work well in the context since it will share some timbral qualities with the other tracks. I call this new piece:

Bullet Train (of Thought)

The second, old track, is something I threw together for a friend to use for a commercial promotional video. He basically wanted something chill-out that would go with the vibe of the company. Although I don’t think his project worked out I am quite satisfied with the result of my work. It is not something spectacular, but since I am not so good at updating I figured I could throw you guys a bone. I decided to name it humorously:

Melodyne Spangled Banner

”This Time It’s Political, Baby!”

This video is my reinterpretation of the Catus Cutie’s performance of ”the Star Spangled Banner”. Basically I wanted to make a political stand on current global events caused and enforced by the USA through rearranging their national anthem in a way I saw more fit. I think it actually sounds more beautiful this way.
This was done using some advanced Melodyne techniques in order to make the changes as unnoticeable as possible (read on further down for an explanation of what Melodyne is). This is almost musical surgery and a trained ear will still hear digital artifacts from the editing, but hopefully some of you won’t realize that they are not singing the song like this at all. Compare with the original to the right to experience the difference.
The idea to play around with the Star Spangled Banner sprung while I was doing basic composition assignment for school (we were to put together a simple minuet). I made a quick sketch – so please pardon the sound – where I changed the major scale into an oriental for an ironic twist fit for Americas newest state ”Iraq”. Originally I was going to do the same but with vocals, but since oriental music does not use chords and the girls were singing harmonies I had to tweak the idea. Have a quick listen if you want a feel of how it could have turned out:

What is Melodyne?

I actually just started using the new version of Melodyne called ”Melodyne Editor” and this video was a way to learn how to operate the software. Melodyne is a pitch correction software similar to Auto-Tune yet much more versatile. These pieces of software are mainly aimed at correcting vocals that are a bit off in pitch, but can also be used for correcting melodies in any kind of instrument. Overuse of this tool creates a synthetic sound that was made famous through Cher’s song ”Believe” and can be heard on any kind of moronic hip-hop or R&B tune on modern radio. However and unfortunately, pitch correction is subtly used on almost every song released today which makes most of the modern pop stars just as fake as Milli Vanilli back in the day.
In the new Melodyne Editor it is now possible to pitch correct polyphonic material (more than one note played at the same time). This enables you to ”dive into” the music and change certain notes in a chord without affecting the others. They call it Dynamic Note Access (DNA). Watch this video to get the idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFCjv4_jqAY. As most audio professionals will tell you, something like this should be more or less impossible which makes it so utterly mind blowing. For instance, someone could record a childrens choir and not have the recording totally ruined if one of the kids is out of tune. Just fix it afterwards like this guy did!
Melodyne is foremost an editing software but it’s so powerful and versatile that I would not be surprised if people start using it as a composing tool like I have instead.

Deus Apparatus

”Godtrogen är gud trogen är godtrogen”

This spring I was involved in a project called ”Futurum” which basically is a platform where classical musicians play new music. The idea is to make musicians interested in playing modern compositions and get composers a chance to have their pieces performed by gifted musicians.
The original idea was that the piece was going to rely on live looping. Apart from this, there would be a lot of ”on the fly” effects processing and heavy programming. With the use of colored LED lights I managed to get a motion tracking tool working. The LEDs were to be attached to the instrument and when moved around different effects would be triggered.
Unfortunately a lot of compromises had to be made and due to lack of preparation time most of the electronic goodies had to be thrown out. Though a pity, we at least got the piece played and the essence of using two instruments as an orchestra was preserved.
The piece was performed at Fylkingen, a venue famous for its contemporary scene, and was part of the ljudOljud festival arranged by the composition students at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
Enjoy

ljudOljud 2010

ljudOljud
The Institution of Composition at Kungl. Musikhögskolan (Royal College of Music) is putting together an annual and FREE music festival during the last week of May at different venues around Stockholm.
I will be attending with a piece I’m currently working on for Violin, Cello and Computer. The piece is called ”Deus apparatus” and will be performed at venue ”Fylkingen” on Södermalm on Friday the 28th of May. Those who would like to attend are most welcome to. I will post a new entry afterwards with video and sound of the performance along with a detailed explanation of what is going on.
For more information about the festival (in Swedish) check out http://kmh.se/ljudoljud

jonaskjellberg.se

I got tired of explaining to swedish people that ”No, it’s not ‘ranch’ or ‘range’. It’s WRENCH; www.WRENCH.se” so I bought another domain. This site can now be accessed through jonaskjellberg.se as well as wrench.se
I also started up a Vimeo channel the other day where I will be keeping any type of video I might produce. The response in the Vimeo community of the installation have been quite good so I’ll definitely use that platform for getting my works out to the public eye.
Tell your friends
UPDATE:
In a week I had over 100 views on Vimeo which is quite good for something strange as this. Therefore I started exploring other platforms and created accounts on both YouTube and Soundcloud. I also added a ”Links” section where these different profiles can be found. I might also add links to collaborations and such there as well.

TELEPHONE 1.0

This is a short excerpt from my sound installation entitled ”Telephone”. The basis is that every parameter is determined by random coincidences. Basically it can play forever without repeating itself entirely.
Every 30 seconds one of two things occur; either the phone rings or ”the stranger” talks in it. The sentences are all constructed randomly on the fly with some 300 prerecorded words to choose from. Sometimes they follow grammatical rules and sometimes it is just jibberish. Reverb and panning is done at random as well.
The background synthesizer is made from 4 oscillators that change scale and key at random. Every time a tone fades out a trigger is sent that either changes pitch, waveform, panning, volume, swell time etc. The synth can also be convoluted by rhytmic impulses (10 to choose from), by the voice or by a set of 30 atmosphere tracks. The atmos tracks can either be loud or soft and could be anything from rain on a window to an Indian wedding. Amount and reverb all done at random.
The video is set to 4 different categories. You have without phone, with phone and the two but with a fisheye effect. The fisheye is triggered either by the phone ringing or when some odd sounds are being spoken. The video order is random and so is the frame skip and color effect.
Sometimes the result is really beautiful and poetic, other times it’s just plain weird.
